WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Jan. 20) – A trio of freshmen picked up key victories for the Waynesburg wrestling team, which beat Washington & Jefferson 28-18 in the first Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) match of the season on Thursday.
The Yellow Jackets (9-2-1, 1-0) received forfeits at 125 and 133 pounds to open the match with a 12-0 lead. W&J scored their first points of the contest with a decision victory at 141, but Waynesburg freshman Luke Lohr got them right back with a hard-fought 2-1 decision over Tyler Berger at 149. The victory was Lohr’s 24th of the year.
Another first-year grappler Sam Lombardo got the start at 157 pounds and picked up the Jackets’ most impressive win of the evening by downing Roja Stephenson by 11-0 major decision. The victory pushed the Jackets’ advantage to 19-3.
After W&J (6-2, 0-1) picked up a fall at 165 pounds, Waynesburg received their third forfeit of the night at 174. The Presidents answered with wins at 185 and 197 to trim the lead down to 25-18 going into the heavyweight bout. Although the Jackets had the match victory in hand, freshman heavyweight Brandon Fedorka was able to put an exclamation point on the victory with an impressive 6-0 win over former PAC heavyweight champion Taylor Potts.
The Jackets return to action on Saturday when several members of the team will be competing at the Messiah Open. Waynesburg is back in dual competition on Tuesday, Jan. 25, when they host Penn State New Kensington in a re-scheduled match from earlier this year. The contest is scheduled to get underway at 7 p.m.
